2 minute 30 second improvement in 12 weeks!

That’s the amazing improvement that one of Peak XV clients has recently made in the pool. Mike competed in the West Lanc’s Triathlon in September and recorded a time of 12 minutes 24 seconds for the 400m swim. Keen to improve on this performance Mike signed up with Peak XV Tri Coaching and started attending the Monday Swim Squad.  Less that 12 weeks later Mike completed the same distance in training in 9 minutes 53 seconds. Even more impressive is that this improvement has been achieved on just 2 swim sessions per week.
When Mike first came to Turton we quickly identified that there were three initial areas to focus on:

  • Increasing confidence in the water
  • Better breathing technique
  • Increasing stroke rate

To increase both confidence in the water and encourage better breathing technique Mike incorporated drills taken from the Swimsmooth Coaching App including Sinkdowns, Sculling and using fins to focus on body alignment. Within a couple of sessions the improvements were obvious.
Like many swimmers Mike had previously been told to lengthen his stroke and increase his glide. However this led to the creation of a dead spot at the front of the stroke. So the third area we are now going to  focus on is increasing Mike’s stroke rate from around 54 strokes per minute up to around 70.  To achieve this Mike has invested in a Finnis Tempo trainer and I would expect to see another reduction in the 400m time at the next test session.
