Bike testing. What did we learn?

After 18 hours of testing, 19 people and two packets of chocolate biscuits what have we learnt?
Well firstly, that every one is different, especially when it comes to heart rate. The average threshold heart rate for the 20 minute test varied from 157bpm to 181bpm. Clearly simply relying on generic formula such as 220 minus your age to work out training zones is at best a wild guess.
When it comes to cadence, similarly there appears to be no “correct number”. The cadence ranged from 112 to 72rpm per minute with very little correlation between this and power output.
The one thing that everyone had in common during the test was the “final minute face.” Usually this kind of expression is reserved for loved ones and I feel honoured to not only witness these but also photograph and share them. So here they are:
