“I’ve always felt that long, slow distance produces long, slow runners.” These are the famous word from none other than Lord Sebastian Coe! And who are we to argue!
For many years now I have been prescribing speed work to my athletes including running on the track! Love it or loath it it is widely acknowledged that a balance of easy runs and hard, fast intervals will really improve your performance. This is why Peak XV Coaching has teamed up with Martin Garnett Personal Training to offer biweekly track session.
The benefits of training on a track with a group of like minded individuals include:
Learning to pace your self during both training and racing is one of the key skills required to achieve your best. Combining track running with a sports watch mean that session can be really targeted and specific. Sessions are measurable, you know how far you have run, the time it has taken and your pace.
Running on a modern track offers a smooth, flat surface and safe environment. You don’t need to worry about crossing roads or knocking into pedestrians. Track running offer the opportunity to focus solely on running. (There is one exception familiar to those who have trained with me at the Bolton Arena Track and have experienced the savage geese)
Positive Peer Pressure
Running with a group means that you’re likely to push harder than you might on your own. You’re also less likely to give up when the going gets tough.
Although it might not feel like it at the time group track sessions can be fun! Friendly banter and the shared experience of accomplishment can be really rewarding.
